Anacostia

History

The Anacostia River used to be a major shipping and trading venue. But decades and centuries of infill have reduced it to something that looks more like a garbage drainage channel.
The Bladensburg port has a long history but is especially known as a “seaport during the colonial period, Bladensburg is best remembered for the Battle of Bladensburg (1814) during the War of 1812, which cleared the way for the burning of Washington by British troops. Its role as a seaport faded as the Anacostia River silted up and larger ships could no longer reach the port.” (wikipedia)
The issue our dance created and addressed is that of responsibility and stewardship of the water, particularly around the issue of garbage.

The Performance

The performance took place at the end of a Youth and Community Health and Economic Festival, and was the culminating event for the full day. Since the issue addressed by our performance was that of responsibility and stewardship of the water, particularly around the issue of garbage, the piece was built on such questions as: Where does garbage belong? What is the cost of putting it where it goes? Who does that? Who can help make the change? And WHY? What would it matter five years and ten years from now? How can we get people to think about the infinite tomorrow? The title of the piece was The Infinite Tomorrow.
