History of Site and Related Water Issues
Silverwood Lake, the highest reservoir in the state of California located at an elevation of 3,355 feet in the San Bernadina Mountains north of Riverside, CA, is a major water resource for agencies serving San Bernadino Mountain and Mojave Desert areas.
The lake also serves as a recreation area for boating, picnicking, swimming, and fishing. There is concern about high levels of mercury and toxic poly-chlorinated biphenyls found several species of the fish (PCBs) in the lake. The particular fish found to contain dangerously high levels of mercury and PCBS include largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and Tule Perch.
Methymercury can harm the brain and nervous system of people, with unborn babies and children especially susceptible.
