The collective: Bodies of Water (BoW) is a transdisciplinary performance, research, and advocacy network that investigates how we access, understand, and respond to water through the human body, art, culture, and public deliberation. The network comprises of artists, community organizations, and a cohort of academics, performers and students from Ireland and the US. Together, this network seeks to build community with water and each other by exploring how this critical environmental resource exists beyond being merely subject to ownership or stewardship. Rather, BoW uses transdisciplinary performance and research to illuminate how water is us as much as it surrounds us.

History of Site and Related Water Issues:

The project addresses a number of local issues in particular in relation to flooding: see for example, http://savecorkcity.org/
It also reflects and responds to the protests and discussions around water rights arising from the attempt of the government to implement water charges in Ireland.
Both of these issues show a lack of engagement with water itself. This project hopes to raise awareness of local issues in context of the global water crisis and to find ways to embrace and collaborate with water. Rather than see water as only a commodity or threat we aim to dance the vitality of water and to creatively explore how we might float other possibilities for our sustainable co-existence and dependence on water…Further explorations to follow!

The Performance:

Every body is made of water; everybody can move like water.
We can be still, we can flow, we can spill over. One drop, a river: we can move alone or together.
From local issues of flooding and restriction to global issues of drought and contamination, our dependence and interdependence on water dissolves the borders, barriers, and walls between us.
Come and join us, to remember that we are all water. Movers from local community dance groups, youth theatre and international student group will dance together to mark the international Global Water Dances Day.
We hope the audience on the day will take part in the fun and dancing, and help us enact a record-breaking, bubble-blowing finale to remind us of our fragility, our interconnection, and freedom. BYOB (Bring your own bubbles).

Event starts at 12noon in Glucksman Gallery Lower Grounds, UCC. This is a free, outdoor, family-friendly event perfect for a lovely summer afternoon.
Plan for all weather—we will dance rain or shine (sunscreen or wellies on the day).

If you would like to get involved as a volunteer or performer — either with your own community group, activist group, or as an individual — please contact us through globalwaterdancescork.wordpress.com, or come on the day.

What to expect:

  • Move and be moved by the water in and around you
  • Connect with people on six continents
  • Enjoy a free, fun, family-friendly open air event
  • Our finale asks audience to move with us, to celebrate and embrace the ways we are water both abundant and also fragile.
  • Participate: Dance and move and bring your bubbles to blow us away with your final gestures…
