History of Site and Related Water Issues:

The story of Cascades Park is at once cautionary and heroic: Forboding us to remember the effects of ill-conceived industrialization and relaxed environmental protection laws. Encouraging us in our ability to redress our past wrongs. Cascades Park is named for the natural stream and waterfall that long ago coursed through Tallahassee, before being destroyed by the toxic byproducts of a nearby manufactured gas plant that operated there from the late 1800’s to mid-1900’s. After a massive excavation of the site, which included the emergence of a massive sinkhole, Cascades Park is now a recreational park that is a key part of the City of Tallahassee’s storm water management system.

The Performance:

Streams of Significance, a Tallahassee-specific component of GWD, begins with a week of interdisciplinary workshops on dance and water science in which approximately 65 scholars from the North Florida Freedom Schools will embody and make personal meaning of local water issues and resources.
The material generated during these workshops will be integrated with the pre-choreographed material that makes up the movement choir that all 100 communities participating in Global Water Dance will perform on Saturday, June 24, 2017.
Then, the NFFS Scholars will join choreographers & performers, Bridget Close, Idy Codington, Afua Hall, Giltrecia Head, Scott Lindenberg, Johana Marie Williams, Mary Catherine Womack at Discovery Field, Cascades Park at 3:00pm, June 24, 2017, when they will perform their dances/ performance installations.
Streams of Significance is made possible with the generosity of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tallahassee.

Environmental Impact:

Approximately 65 young scholars from the North Florida Freedom Schools Summer Camp will make personal meaning through movement and dance about their roles and relationship with local water crises and resources.
