History of Site and Related Water Issues:

The need for such a connection was evident, and Johann Jakob in the Hof-Forcart took the initiative, and in the spring of 1854, one year after the ferry was put into operation at Birchopf, he applied for a petition between the Harzgrabenschanze And the Baarmatte to build a “flying bridge” – ferries were then called. The plan was to make a profit with the ferry, in order to build a house for gatherings and exhibitions of the artist’s company. The request was granted, and at the end of November of the same year, the Harzgrabenfähre, as the connection was officially called, was able to start operations. The ferry boat was named “Rheinmücke.”
In 1862, the artist commissioned a second ferry service linking the Grossbasler Totentanz to the Kleinbasler barracks, the present Klingental ferry. As hoped, the ferries paid off, and after the artist had merged with the Kunstverein, the Kunsthalle was built with the gain at Steinenberg. This was opened in 1872.

The Performance:

To create a union between each one of us and the being of water, its vitality, its beauty, its strength, its rhythm, its dynamics, its flow, it is the mirror of our own movement, it gives us life, it is life. Joining these elements in dance and artistic expression, is to give the respect that this element has in our every day, makes us exist as we are.
