History of Site and Related Water Issues

Falls Park on the Reedy provides a place of rest, exercise, and time with nature for all Greenville community members. With its beautiful manmade waterfalls, the park was originally developed in the 1770s by Richard Pearis, a Virginia Indian Trader, who built a grist mall, a sawmill, his own home, a store stocked with Native American goods, a smokenhouse, stables, a dairy, a blacksmith shop, and slave quarters. Called the “Great Plains Plantation,” the settlement is considered the birthplace of the city of Greenville. The waterfalls, which takes up most of the park space, are considered the park’s main attraction; perceived as a metaphor of nature and community, the park draws people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests.

Music

Excerpts of “8 String Religion” by David Darling & live sounds of bells and drums

The Performance

This guided water dance celebration will be performed by professional dance artists/educators from the Greenville region, Hannah Park, Angelina Richter and Bess Park. This dance will be open to all; the only requirement being that interest participants attend our free open workshop in preparation of the performance. The workshop will take place from 9:30am to 10:45am and will start in front of the water fountain located at the entrance of the park. This will be followed by a 15-minute break, with the performance starting at 11:00am. If you enjoy expressing yourself through your body, celebrating nature, conserving water, or simply enjoy being around people of all ages and backgrounds, please feel free to join this free and fun event!

If you choose to take part, you will be guided to dance by yourself, with peers, and in groups. You will express various ideas about the water site with your body and connect and collaborate with others to celebrate the Global Water Dance event in the Greenville region. The dance will explore what the water site at the park represents, including flow, earthiness, stableness, conversion, pathways, sacredness, connection, and ceremonial and celebratory auras; it will use the live sounds of water as its main music, accompanied by classical music, live percussion, and the nature sounds that the park has to offer.

Come one, come all, and enjoy yourself while actively moving your body and celebrating each other’s company! Be part of an intergenerational celebration in this guided, improvised dance at Falls Park on the Reedy!
