History of Site and Related Water Issues

The fountains surrounding Blaisdell Center & Concert Hall come from a natural spring that is the start of a stream that runs to the harbor.
Now covered by paved roads and multiple shopping complexes, this stream is no longer visible. It is categorized as a ‘sewer’ even though it is fresh water from a natural stream.
This dance-walk speaks to these forgotten changes as well as the rapid development now taking place in Kaka’ako. By tracing its route with our own movement, it is an opportunity to re-discover and resurrect this ‘lost stream.’

Music

We will start with a well-known mele called ‘Old Plantation,’ written by Mary Jane Montano and David Nape in 1904. Also known as Ku’u Home, this song is about the home of the Ward sisters at Kulaokahu’a.
This ‘mele pana,’ a song of a special place, references the refreshing and sparkling bubbling waters of the natural spring.

The Performance

Spatial Sculptors, Honolulu’s contact & compositional improvisation dance ensemble, will be leading the dance-walk. We will dance an improvised structure, all are welcome to join, watch, or walk with us!

Directions to the Site of Performance

We will meet at 4:30pm at the mauka ewa corner of parking structure (that you can turn in on Victoria), and dance-walk down to the harbor.
At about 6pm we will circle back to Cooke Street in time for Honolulu Night Market.
Join us for the walk or at Kaka’ako Agora for a photo installation by Jeff Hawe & a showcase of inspiring water initiatives.
